Community Service (Live-In) 2 2019

Community Service (Live-In) was held from Sunday-Wednesday, 08-11 December 2019 with the Wates Village community (Balong Village, Juwono Village), Sub-District Dukun and Pucanganom Village (Berokan Village) Serumbung Sub-District, Magelang District, Central Java Province. The participants were all Year 10 Senior High School Students, both male and female, along with several support teachers, of course. The region is at the foothills of Merapi Volcano, where many of the community members are produce or livestock farmers. This activity was aimed at educating the students about traditions and culture, as well as raising empathy and solidarity for their community.

Day 1

Community Service (Live-In) on Sunday 08 December 2019

Preparations for departure began with a briefing and then departure to Wates and Pucanganom villages. After arriving, the students headed for the homes of community members to meet, greet and get to know the householders where they would be staying. The locations and families had previously been determined by the village heads. After this, participants ate lunch then attended a social activity where they warmly welcomed by the residents and the head of Wates and Pucanganom villages. On the first day, the social activities began with getting to know their allocated families, through to a working bee after they had finished their Asar Prayers. All the boys were tasked with cleaning up the mosque rooms and yards, while in the village where the girls were placed, girls did some religious studies. They also had time to rest and read books.

Day 2

Community Service (Live-In) on Monday 09 December 2019

All the students began the day on Monday with the dawn prayers and religious studies with the villagers. The students helped make breakfast, cooking and washing the dishes in the kitchen. Most of the villagers are farmers in Wates village. Social activities began with students joining the residents in their activities in the rice fields and gardens. There were also some who helped sharing their knowledge at the local schools, namely Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) Al Barokah and Wates Elementary.

After lunch, the male students and the mothers’ club prepared clothes and basic food supplies for a bazaar for underprivileged residents while female students went with the nurses and prepared to do community health check-ups, (uric acid, glucose, cholesterol).

Day 3

Community Service (Live-In) on Tuesday 10 December 2019

Students began the day on Tuesday as they did on Monday, with dawn prayers and religious studies with the villagers. The students helped make breakfast, cooking and washing the dishes in the kitchens. Most of the villagers are farmers in Wates village. Social activities began with students joining the residents in their activities in the rice fields and gardens. There were also some who helped sharing their knowledge at the Wates National Elementary School.

After lunch, the male students and the mothers’ club prepared clothes and basic food supplies for a bazaar for underprivileged residents while female students went with the nurses and prepared to do community health check-ups, (uric acid, glucose, cholesterol).

After the Isya Prayers, there was a closing ceremony at the Al-Malik Mosque, attended by the head of the village, boarding school students and the community, followed by a meal together.

Day 4

Community Service (Live-In) on Wednesday 11 December 2019

On the last day, the students began their day doing regular morning chores, helping around the house of the family where each group had stayed. This included preparing breakfast through to cleaning. Goodbyes were said with thankfulness and gratefulness for having had the privilege of staying with the families and also for the service and togetherness of the Kesatuan Bangsa Year 10 students.  Praise be to God that the social service activity had run well and the students arrived safely back at school.
